Mary Anderson's windshield wiper cleaned glass from inside the car
In 1903 Anderson patented a lever and sprung blade that let a driver clear rain without stopping.

Early autos had no windshield wiper, and in a New York snowstorm the sight of a driver stopping every few minutes to wipe the snow off the windshield gave Mary Anderson the problem. A car that cannot be seen through safely is not much use in bad weather, and the only existing fix required the driver to stop and clean by hand.
Anderson designed a spring-loaded arm and rubber blade that swept across the windshield from outside, controlled by a lever a person could operate from inside the car. That kept the glass clear while driving rather than forcing a stop, and she filed for a patent in June 1903, awarded US Patent 743,801 that November.
The genius was not power but placement: the cleaning happened on the exact surface the light passes through, and the control was where the driver already sat, so clearing rain became one hand motion instead of an interruption.
