Makro's ripeness stickers make 'overripe' produce sellable

Colombian retailer Makro added colour-shifting stickers to produce with recipes at each ripeness stage, extending fruit and veg shelf life about six days.

the move

A large share of Colombia's food waste is fruit and vegetables, and the cause is as much perception as logistics: consumers assume a banana that has gone brown is no longer usable and discard it or leave it unsold. For a cash-and-carry wholesaler like Makro, that early rejection means shrinking the window in which produce can generate revenue.

Makro and Grey Colombia made the ripeness itself the message. Their Life Extending Stickers look like ordinary produce labels but change colour with the fruit's own ripening, and each colour carries a serving suggestion - so a banana's sticker runs from green to yellow to brown to black, paired with fried, ice cream, tempura and cupcake, telling shoppers how to use the fruit at every stage.

Because the sticker sits directly on the produce and needs no app or scanning, it removes the barrier between the idea and the act. The same brown banana that used to be a loss becomes an invitation to make something, and the store can bring produce in earlier and keep it selling longer. It is a low-tech, low-cost media space that changes behaviour where it happens.

why it works

  • The sticker is one inch, so it is nearly free and requires no new consumer behaviour.
  • Matched recipes dignify produce that shoppers thought was waste.
  • Extending the shelf about six days widens the revenue window for the store.
  • It works in-store and at home without an app, so adoption is immediate.

what transfers

When customer perception not product quality is the constraint, you can change the perception with a near-costless nudge placed right on the product, extending the window in which it sells.

what came after

Launched in April 2023 across 22 Makro stores in Colombia, the stickers were forecast to extend the average lifetime of fruit and vegetables by roughly six days and to save about 70 tonnes of food waste a week across stores and homes. The campaign won a Gold Lion in the Outdoor category at Cannes 2023, a Grand LIA and multiple further awards, and became a reference for low-technology behaviour-change work in retail.
