Maersk Spot fixed the price at booking and guaranteed loading, ending the overbooking game

Maersk Spot (2019) gives instant fixed all-in prices and a cargo-load guarantee online, cutting a 13-step booking process to five and attacking overbooking.

the move

Booking a container used to be a long, uncertain dance: customers asked for space, carriers overbooked by as much as 30% to cover no-shows, and real cargo got 'rolled' off ships — breaking delivery promises and trust.

In June 2019 Maersk launched Maersk Spot, a fully online product. Customers see competitive rates 24/7, and the all-in price is calculated and fixed the instant the booking is confirmed; the process drops from up to 13 manual steps to five integrated ones.

The twist is a mutual commitment: the customer pays a fee if they cancel, and Maersk guarantees loading and compensates the customer if the cargo is rolled anyway. That removes the incentive to overbook on both sides.

Within weeks more than 3,000 unique customers were booking through it weekly and over 50,000 forty-foot-equivalent units were booked in the second quarter — with cement maker Ramco Cements citing the end of 'not knowing if we can load'.

why it works

  • A fixed price and load guarantee turn shipping from a gamble into a promise.
  • Cancellation fees stop the free no-shows that forced 30% overbooking in the first place.
  • Five online steps beat thirteen offline ones for the customer and for Maersk.
  • Compensating rolls made the guarantee credible, so customers actually trusted it.

what transfers

Make commitment reciprocal: guarantee the scarce resource, charge for cancelling it, and the system stops gaming itself — certainty is worth paying for.

what came after

Maersk presented Spot as a step toward simplifying customers' supply chains and kept expanding its digital offering, framing the product as part of its shift from shipping line to integrated container logistics provider. The overbooking problem it attacked is structural in ocean freight, and Spot's fixed-price-plus-guarantee model pushed the rest of the industry toward more transparent digital booking.
