Lely's Astronaut let cows choose when to be milked; robotic milking went global

The solution

Dairy farms grew larger while skilled labor got harder to find, and the fixed twice-a-day milking parlor tied the whole farm to a rigid shift. Any automation still had to solve the hard part: finding each cow's teats and attaching the cups reliably, which early robots could not do.

Lely filed its first patents for robotic milking in 1985, tested a working prototype in 1992 and launched the Astronaut in 1995. The cow walks into a feeding stall whenever she wants, a camera and laser locate the teats, and the robot arm attaches the cups automatically — milking runs 24/7 on the cow's schedule.

The design changed the farm layout too: with free cow traffic there is no holding yard and no herding stress. Lely's own history says the robot became a fixture of modern dairy farming and the concept was refined through the A2, A3 and A5 generations, while dairy science reviewed robotic milking's effects on workflow.

Aftermath

The Astronaut line kept evolving — the A2 automated cup attachment, the A3 moved quality sensing to the arm — and robotic milking spread across Europe and beyond, with Lely's machines becoming the reference for voluntary milking systems.
