LEGO froze one dimension of its product forever in 1958, so a brick bought today still snaps onto one from before its own designer's grandchildren were born

LEGO's original interlocking bricks, sold from 1949, were simple hollow studs on top of a hollow brick — a workable design, but one that produced unstable models prone to falling apart, generating regular complaints from the market. The standard response to a design flaw is to redesign and improve the product for its next generation, accepting that older units become obsolete or incompatible with the new line, the way nearly every manufactured product line evolves.
Godtfred Kirk Christiansen, working with colleague Axel Thomsen, sketched a fix on 23 January 1958: adding hollow tubes to the underside of each brick that would grip the studs of the brick below it, creating real mechanical 'clutch power' that held models together firmly while still allowing bricks to be pulled apart and rebuilt. LEGO filed the patent for this stud-and-tube system five days later, on 28 January 1958.
what everyone would do
Redesign the brick to fix the instability complaints and move on to the next generation of the product, the way virtually every manufactured product line handles a design flaw -- accept that the improved version won't be compatible with what customers already own, because compatibility was never treated as a design requirement in the first place.

A toy brick isn't just a single unit sold once, it's one piece of a collection a child keeps adding to for years -- so the real product wasn't the brick shape itself, it was the promise that this brick would still fit with every brick already owned. Locking that one physical interface permanently turned every future LEGO set, no matter how different its theme or era, into an addition to a customer's existing collection rather than a competing, incompatible product.
the move
Rather than treat the stud-and-tube system as one design among future iterations, LEGO committed to it as a permanent physical standard: the stud diameter, the tube dimensions and the resulting clutch force have stayed essentially fixed for more than 65 years since. Every LEGO set made afterward, across every theme and every decade, uses bricks built to interlock with bricks from every other set ever made under the same standard — a single 2x4 brick pattern alone yields, per LEGO's own patent-era calculation, over 915 million possible combinations with just six pieces.
why it works
Freezing the stud-and-tube dimensions means every new set, however many decades later, plugs directly into whatever a customer already owns instead of asking them to choose between old and new; because the accumulated value of a LEGO collection compounds across every purchase a family or a child ever makes, walking away from LEGO means abandoning years of already-invested pieces, while sticking with LEGO means each new set adds to an ever-larger, still-fully-compatible whole. That installed-base effect gets stronger with every year the standard holds, which is precisely why LEGO has never revised the core dimensions since 1958 even as materials, colors and molding technology advanced dramatically around that fixed core.

A brick manufactured in 1958 still connects correctly to a brick manufactured today, a compatibility guarantee LEGO has never broken across the entire history of the modern brick, letting customers combine sets purchased decades apart into a single collection rather than treating each release as a standalone, obsolescing product — an installed base spanning generations that no toy line built around incompatible redesigns has been able to replicate.
where it breaks
The commitment only pays off if the underlying interface is genuinely worth being permanent -- lock in a flawed or too-narrow standard too early and every future product is stuck inheriting that flaw, unable to fix it without breaking the compatibility promise that was the whole point. It also requires a product category where customers actually accumulate units over time and value combining old with new; a product bought once and discarded, or one where each generation is used in isolation, gets no benefit from cross-generational compatibility and gains nothing from sacrificing future design freedom to preserve it.
what came after
The stud-and-tube system remains the physical foundation of every standard LEGO brick sold today, and LEGO's commitment to permanent backward compatibility is cited in product-design and platform-strategy literature as a reference case for locking a core physical or technical interface early and never breaking it, even as the surrounding product line evolves dramatically around that fixed core.
