Kooringa, 1964's first cellular containership, stacked boxes in fixed cells below deck

Kooringa, the first purpose-built cellular container ship, gave every box a fixed slot and made containerization a real system.

the move

The first container ships were converted bulkers and tankers. They carried a few boxes on deck, but the holds below stayed full of loose cargo, and on-board cranes were needed because no port was equipped. Speed was low and the payload small, so the economics were marginal beyond a few routes.

Kooringa, built in 1964 by State Dockyard New South Wales for Associated Steamships, was the first ship designed from the keel up to hold containers. Her holds were a grid of cell guides, so a container could be lowered straight into its own slot and stacked several deep. The ship and the box were now the same system.

With cell guides, cranes could work from the top, containers could be stowed both above and below deck, and the ship did not need to carry its own cranes. That made containerized shipping faster to load and cheaper per box, and opened routes that a deck-only converted tanker could not serve economically.

A new unit of cargo only becomes an industry when the machine built around it matches its shape; adapting the old platform caps how far the unit can go.

what came after

Kooringa entered the Australian coastal trade and proved the cellular design. Within a few years fully cellular containerships became the norm, and by the early 1970s containerization had spread to the world's main trade lanes. Cell-guide hulls are now the standard architecture of container vessels.
