Invisalign replaced braces with digital modeling and a series of clear trays

the move

Braces were effective but metal, visible, painful and hard to keep clean, which kept many adults away. Zia Chishti, an adult orthodontic patient, and Kelsey Wirth founded Align Technology in March 1997 to build a clear alternative.

Align used 3D digital modeling to plan the tooth movement, then mass-customized a sequence of clear aligners, each moving the teeth a small amount toward the planned final position, so no brackets or wires were needed.

Align received FDA clearance in 1998 and began selling the Invisalign system to North American orthodontists in 1999, then shifted its focus to general-practice dentists, which greatly widened the market for clear aligners.
