Dexcom's G6 made glucose monitoring continuous and fingerstick-free
A skin sensor streams glucose every few minutes to a phone; the G6's factory calibration removed fingersticks, and trials showed HbA1c falling 0.6% more.

Fingerstick meters give point samples, so the dangerous swings between tests go unseen, especially for people with type 1 diabetes who use injections rather than pumps.
Dexcom's G6 puts a small sensor under the skin that measures interstitial glucose every few minutes and streams trends and alarms. Authorized by the FDA in March 2018 (De Novo DEN170088), it was the first real-time integrated CGM with factory calibration — no fingersticks for calibration or treatment decisions — and a 10-day wear.
The DIAMOND randomized trial (158 adults, JAMA 2017) found CGM lowered HbA1c by 1.0 percent versus 0.4 percent for injection users at 24 weeks, with 93 percent of participants wearing the sensor six days a week or more.
