Burbn, Systrom and Krieger's original app, combined location check-ins, plan-making, gamified points for socializing, and photo-sharing into a single feature-dense product competing directly against Foursquare's check-in model — and it stalled, gaining only a small user base that struggled to understand what the app was actually for amid its many competing functions. The instinct in that position is usually to add differentiating features to compete harder on the crowded terrain the product already occupied.
Instead, the founders looked at actual usage data rather than their own assumptions about what the product should be: users almost never used the check-in and planning features, but consistently used the one feature that had been just a small part of the bundle — photo sharing. They stripped Burbn down to essentially nothing but that single function, discarding the location-based social-gaming premise the entire product had originally been built around.
Stripped Burbn to photo sharing only, then added filters to remove the hesitation that photos looked worse, making the one wanted behavior clear and attractive.
Usage data revealed photo sharing was the only feature users consistently used.
Stripping away check-ins and gamification removed confusion and let the core behavior shine.
The filter directly addressed the specific hesitation users had about sharing photos.
A focused product with a clear value proposition attracted rapid adoption.
When a product stalls, mine usage data for the one feature users already love, then cut everything else and fix the remaining friction.
Instagram launched as a standalone iPhone app on 6 October 2010, drew 25,000 downloads on its first day alone, and reached 100,000 downloads within its first week — a trajectory that led to a 2012 acquisition by Facebook for roughly $1 billion, a valuation multiple of Twitter's contemporaneous worth despite Instagram having a small fraction of the staff and feature set.
