A table wouldn't fit in an IKEA employee's car, so he sawed its legs off — and built the company's entire business model out of the fix

Furniture in the 1950s was sold the way it had always been sold: built and finished at the factory, then shipped whole. That meant paying to move mostly-empty air — a shipped table or chair is bulky far out of proportion to the wood and fabric in it — and it meant a shop floor's stock was limited to whatever finished pieces fit in the showroom and back room, since nothing could be compressed for storage.
IKEA in 1956 was a small Swedish mail-order furniture business built around a print catalog, and Gillis Lundgren, its fourth employee, was its catalog photographer. Getting a finished table from the workshop to a photo shoot meant fitting it, fully assembled, into his car — a logistics problem nobody at the company had set out to solve, because nobody had questioned whether furniture needed to travel assembled at all.
what everyone would do
The furniture industry's standard answer to high shipping and storage costs was optimization within the assembled shape — denser truck-packing, more efficient warehouse layouts, better route planning. That treats the fully assembled table as a fixed constraint to work around, when the constraint itself, an arbitrary holdover from how furniture had always been built and shipped, was the actual source of the cost: a table is bulky mostly because of the empty space its own shape encloses, not because of the material in it.
what they saw
Lundgren's practical problem — a table that wouldn't fit in his car — exposed a fact the whole industry had never questioned: a table's assembled shape isn't required for the table to exist, it's just the form everyone happened to sell it in. Once the legs came off and the table packed flat, the insight generalized immediately — furniture could be manufactured, shipped and stocked in its most compact form and only reach its 'final' shape at the customer's home, moving the assembly step across the supply chain instead of trying to make the old shape cheaper to move.
the move
Lundgren couldn't fit the LÖVET side table into his car for the shoot, so he removed its legs and packed it flat. Rather than treat this as a one-off workaround, he pushed IKEA to redesign the table — and then its wider range — to be manufactured, boxed and shipped disassembled from the start, with the customer completing the final assembly step at home. The Lövet table, sold flat-packed, became IKEA's first mass-produced hit product.
why it works
Shipping and storing furniture disassembled removes almost all the empty air that made an assembled piece expensive to move — a flat-packed table takes a small fraction of the volume of the same table standing on its legs, so far more units fit in a truck, a warehouse, or a showroom's back room. That density directly cuts IKEA's per-unit logistics and storage cost, savings that show up as the industry-low prices IKEA became known for, while the cost that disappears from IKEA's side of the ledger — final assembly — is a fixed, one-time task the customer performs once, cheaply, rather than something IKEA has to do for every unit it ever sells. The trade only works because assembly is genuinely something an ordinary customer with basic tools can complete correctly, so shifting it doesn't create a quality problem; it just relocates a task from the expensive part of the chain (mass logistics) to the cheap part (one person, once).
the payoff
Flat-pack became the standing design constraint for virtually every piece IKEA has made since: furniture is engineered from the outset to disassemble into a dense, stackable box, letting IKEA ship far more units per truck or container than an assembled-furniture competitor and stock warehouses and showrooms at a density no rival matched. IKEA credits the shift with pushing furniture prices in its category to what it describes as an industry low, and the company built from that model into the world's largest furniture retailer, with tens of billions of dollars in annual revenue.
where it breaks
The technique depends on the finished product being genuinely disassemblable into a meaningfully denser shape without ruining its function or quality — some furniture and most non-furniture products don't compress this way, and forcing a bad fit for the sake of flat-packing would trade a real logistics saving for a worse product. It also depends on the assembly step being simple and reliable enough for an average customer to complete correctly without specialized tools or skill; a product whose assembly requires precision, calibration, or expertise can't safely be handed to the buyer, and a customer who assembles it wrong bears a cost (frustration, a broken product, a support call) that a company has to weigh against its logistics savings. And the model only pays off at the volume IKEA operates at — the fixed cost of redesigning a whole product line for disassembly only amortizes into real savings if enough units ship to make the denser packing meaningful.
what came after
Lundgren went on to design the BILLY bookcase, of which IKEA has since produced well over 100 million units, and the flat-pack principle he popularized in 1956 is credited industry-wide, including by Guinness World Records, which recognizes the Lövet table as furniture's first flat-pack product — the design constraint that still defines how IKEA, and much of the mass-market furniture industry that later copied it, engineers everything it sells.
