HungerStation sold delivery with a birthmark myth and won a Lynx Grand Prix
Saudi delivery app HungerStation sold cravings through birthmark folklore — 120,000 new customers and a Lynx Grand Prix.
HungerStation
The solution
In Saudi Arabia's crowded food-delivery market, HungerStation's pitch — fast delivery, the widest vendor choice, late-night orders — sounded like everyone else's. A conventional campaign would have shouted the same features louder and stayed invisible.
VML Riyadh instead reached for an Arab folk belief: a pregnant woman's unfulfilled craving leaves a birthmark shaped like that craving on her child. The agency filmed real Saudis telling the stories behind their birthmarks, each tale quietly demonstrating a HungerStation feature — the craving delivered fast, from any vendor, at any hour.
To close the loop, the campaign gave mothers-to-be an exclusive promo coupon, playfully framed as a way to reduce the chance of an unwanted birthmark. Folklore became the reason to try the app, and the coupon made the first order easy.
The stories became a national talking point: 1.3 million impressions, 420,000 video views with a 34% view rate. HungerStation converted the buzz into 120,000 new customers — 5,500 per day — and took the Creative Effectiveness Grand Prix at Dubai Lynx 2025.
Why it worked
- The folklore is pre-sold: a belief everyone grew up with, so the ads feel like culture rather than claims.
- Each story carries a product feature without sounding like a feature list, so the selling stays disguised.
- The coupon gives a defined audience — expectant mothers — a concrete, on-myth reason to place a first order.
- Real personal stories are inherently shareable, so the media budget amplified itself into millions of impressions.
What can be applied
When every rival shouts the same claim, borrow the culture's own beliefs: a story people half-believe carries your feature list further than any ad. Then give one audience a concrete reason to try.
Aftermath
Beyond the Grand Prix, the work also collected a Bronze Lynx. The 120,000-customer result showed what cultural insight could do in a commodity category, and the expectant-mother coupon kept running as a hook while HungerStation retained its position as Saudi Arabia's leading delivery app.
