Hump yards sort thousands of railcars a day by letting gravity do the pushing

Railroads push cars over a hill; each uncouples and rolls by gravity to its track, braked by retarders.

The solution

A freight train of unrelated cars must be broken apart and regrouped by destination before it can depart. The naive way is flat switching: a locomotive shoves and pulls cars one at a time. Hump yards, which appeared in Germany in 1858 and France in 1863, inverted the problem by building a small hill and letting gravity move the cars.

At the crest, the pusher engine uncouples single cars or blocks; they roll down through a ladder of switches onto destination tracks in the classification bowl. Retarders — rail brakes that grip the wheels — adjust speed for load, weather and track conditions so each car couples safely.

The payoff is capacity: the largest hump yards sort several thousand cars a day, and Bailey Yard in North Platte, Nebraska is the world's largest classification yard. Why it worked

  • Gravity is free and parallel: one engine services a whole cut, not one car at a time.
  • A bowl of 20–40 tracks makes sorting a single roll instead of a sequence of shoves.
  • Retarders replace riders and skates, making heavy, light and weather differences controllable.
  • A small artificial hill costs far less than doubling the track.

What can be applied

For repetitive movement work, do not buy more engines for every move — build a small fixed gradient that does the work, then control only the speed at the end.

Aftermath

Hump yards dominated North American classification for a century. From 2020 Norfolk Southern idled the humps at Bellevue and Enola and returned to flat switching, saying it shortens the time a car waits in the yard; Europe, Russia and China still run all their major classification yards as hump yards.
