Home Box furnishes the rooms domestic workers never mention

Home Box asked 329 domestic workers about their favourite room; none said their own. So the retailer designed and sold furniture for those tiny hidden rooms.

Home Box

The solution

Expat domestic workers keep the big villas and towers of the Middle East running, yet the rooms they live in are tiny — typically 7 by 10 feet, sometimes smaller — and the furniture industry has always ignored them.

Home Box asked 329 domestic workers about their favourite places in the homes where they work. Every room came up except one: their own. That silence was the insight, and it inspired 'The Hidden Room', a short film by Leo Burnett Dubai about four real workers — Wasanti, Melat, Queenie and Reshma — telling their own stories, unscripted, in their own words.

The film was not the product; it was the reveal. Home Box launched The Hidden Room Collection — smart storage, prints, textures and colours designed with its own team for small spaces — in stores across the Middle East and on a dedicated website, timed for Eid al-Adha, one of the year's biggest shopping moments.

Results from the campaign's case study: audience sentiment swung from 64% negative among those responsible for the inequality to 78% positive; the collection reached 137,000+ rooms; it earned $4.1 million in media value; and the work is credited with helping improve legal conditions in domestic-worker contracts. It won the Creative Effectiveness Grand Prix at Dubai Lynx 2024.

Why it worked

  • Asking the workers revealed a need no category research would have surfaced.
  • Real stories in their own words made the problem felt before any product appeared.
  • A designed product line turned empathy into a revenue-generating business.
  • Launching at Eid al-Adha gave the collection an immediate shopping occasion.

What can be applied

An overlooked customer segment hides an unserved product need. Home Box turned empathy research into a saleable line, so doing good and selling furniture were the same act.

Aftermath

The Hidden Room Collection stayed on sale at Home Box stores and online after launch. The campaign won the Creative Effectiveness Grand Prix at Dubai Lynx 2024 and was a finalist at the London International Awards, and its case study credits improved legal conditions for domestic helpers.
