Hollerith's punched card made census data machine-readable and became computing's standard
Facing an 1880 census it couldn't tabulate, the Census Bureau held a contest; Hollerith's electric tabulator with punched cards won and defined data processing.

the move
The 1880 U.S. census took seven years to tabulate, and the country was growing faster than clerks could count. The Census Bureau held an 1888 competition: process 1880 data from four St. Louis areas, and the fastest contestant would win the contract for the 1890 census.
The first two entrants captured the data in 144.5 and 100.5 hours; Herman Hollerith, a former census employee, took 72.5 hours. Then came the real test — preparing data for tabulation by age, race and sex: his rivals needed 44.5 and 55.5 hours, Hollerith finished in 5.5.
His machine's trick was the medium. Census responses were encoded as holes in paper cards; a plate of pins pressed through the holes into mercury wells completed electrical circuits that registered each answer on dials. Data that had lived in handwritten ledgers now lived in a form a machine could read, sort and count.
The win was not just a contract. The electric tabulator and its punched cards became the model for machine data processing, and modified versions of Hollerith's technology stayed in use at the Census Bureau until computers replaced them in the 1950s.
why it works
- Holes are unambiguous: a card either has a punch or it doesn't, so machine sensing is trivial and reliable.
- Cards were cheap, portable and durable, letting data move between rooms, offices and machines.
- The same card format served capture, sorting and tabulation, so one investment spanned the whole pipeline.
- The Census Bureau's contest gave the design a real deadline and a real contract, forcing it to prove speed on data.

Hollerith's machines won the 1890 census contract, and the card-and-pin principle became the standard way to feed data to machines for the next six decades. The Census Bureau kept using modified versions of his technology until computers replaced them in the 1950s, and the punched card itself became the data medium of the early computer industry.
