Hertog Jan out-crafted Heineken and became the Netherlands' #1 beer brand

A small Limburg craft-style brewer beat the pils giants by proving craftsmanship to pils drinkers, ending Heineken's reign as the Netherlands' #1 beer.

Hertog Jan (AB InBev)

The solution

Hertog Jan is a specialty-brewery brand from Arcen, owned by AB InBev and positioned against Dutch pils giants led by Heineken. Its agency The Valley built a long-running 'uit liefde voor bier' strategy: instead of football, Formula 1 and carnival sponsorships, the brand funded small, credible craft-beer initiatives that proved the brewer's love of the craft.

The insight was a halo effect: Dutch pils drinkers saw brewing high-quality specialty beer as proof of craftsmanship, so consistent premium craft work made the brand's pils more believable. The jury for the 2023 Effie NL gold credited this 'category-atypical strategy' with changing Dutch preference and behavior.

The result was a market upheaval: by 2022 NielsenIQ data showed Hertog Jan as the best-selling beer brand in Dutch supermarkets, and by the end of 2023 it had displaced Heineken as the #1 beer brand in the Netherlands across volume beer, volume pils, brand power and penetration.

Why it worked

  • A craft halo makes a mainstream product feel premium
  • Small initiatives look authentic where giant budgets look bought
  • Consistency over years compounds into preference
  • The pils drinker decides the category, and the halo won them
What it achievedWin mainstream pils with a craft haloclever

What can be applied

When giants out-spend you, out-craft them: a credible premium halo from small authentic acts, kept consistent for years, makes mainstream buyers adopt you without a giant media budget.

Aftermath

Hertog Jan stayed the best-selling beer in Dutch supermarkets for a third consecutive year (NielsenIQ via FHM, 2025) while Heineken's Dutch portfolio share fell from 42% to 38% over a decade. The case won the 2024 Global Grand Effie for Sustained Success, Products.
