Heinz made a stain-proof thobe so Saudi men could eat ketchup proudly

Saudi men saw a ketchup stain on a white thobe as shame; Heinz engineered a nano-coated, washable thobe tailored by local craftsmen.

Kraft Heinz · Wunderman Thompson Dubai

The solution

Heinz was a market leader in Saudi Arabia yet felt distant — respected for quality but read as a global brand with no local roots. Wunderman Thompson Dubai found the real barrier in culture, not taste: images of Gulf men eating showed no ketchup, because a stain on a pristine white thobe is a stain on pride.

The team spent nearly a year testing water-repellent sprays and ceramic coatings before settling on nanotechnology applied to the yarn before weaving. That preserved the thobe's design, fabric feel and heat balance, survived hundreds of washes, and still allowed traditional tailoring — with local craftsmen involved from the research stage.

The limited-edition Unstainable Thobe was offered through Heinz social channels and became a local statement. LBB reported a significant rise in positive sentiment, pride at a global brand honouring a national icon, and resonance in other markets with large Muslim populations; it won the Dubai Lynx 2023 Brand Experience & Activation Grand Prix.

Why it worked

  • The barrier was a cultural rule, not taste; solving the garment solved the consumption problem.
  • Coating the yarn before weaving preserved the thobe's feel, breathability and tailoring tradition.
  • Involving local tailors made the launch a partnership instead of an intrusion on a national symbol.
  • A real, wearable limited edition gave the idea proof that no film or poster could match.

What can be applied

When a global product collides with local pride, change the interface: a stain-proof thobe removed the reason to avoid ketchup and gave Heinz a local story.

Aftermath

The Unstainable Thobe became one of the most-cited Middle East campaigns of 2023, taking the Dubai Lynx Grand Prix in Brand Experience & Activation. Despite warnings that touching the thobe risked national pride, the response was pride rather than resistance: local media picked up the story, and Heinz gained a tangible story of local roots in Saudi Arabia — and resonance in other Muslim-majority markets.
