Heineken hid in Malaysian New Year greetings on its delivery trucks to dodge the ad ban
Cropping its logo to just 'Hei'—happiness in Cantonese—Heineken turned delivery trucks into legal festive billboards.

the move
Malaysia is an advertising dark market for alcohol: mainstream media and even the massive out-of-home sector are banned, and a delivery truck showing a full Heineken logo could mean fines or jail. For Chinese New Year—the biggest beer-selling season—Tiger Beer owned the celebration while Heineken had a budget under US$15,000.
The creative leap was linguistic: 'Hei' means happiness in Cantonese and opens 'Gong Hei Fatt Choi', and it is also the first three letters of Heineken. Eleven existing delivery trucks were wrapped with CNY greetings completed by the cropped logotype, removing over 50% of the brand mark.
For 49 days the trucks travelled 36,465 kilometres on normal delivery routes, becoming the only beer brand legally visible outdoors during the season. With zero paid outdoor spend, the campaign generated US$6.8 million in earned media, reached 33.9 million people in a country of 34.5 million, and lifted sales volume 14% over CNY 2023.
why it works
- The ban made every legitimate sighting more valuable
- 'Hei' made the logo a greeting, not an ad
- Delivery routes provided free, nationwide distribution
- Fans reused the trick on cans, extending the reach
what transfers
A restriction on your full identity is not a restriction on your parts: crop the brand into the culture's own alphabet and the culture will carry it.
