Heidelberg's Push to Stop lets the printing press run itself — the operator only stops it
Introduced at drupa 2016, Push to Stop inverted press control: the Speedmaster changes jobs autonomously and the operator intervenes only when needed.

The solution
Printing presses traditionally waited for an operator to start every job: set-up, color, wash-up and sequencing all needed skilled hands, so make-ready ate hours and waste ate margin. Heidelberg's 'Push to Stop' philosophy, launched with the new Speedmaster generation at drupa 2016, flipped the model.
Instead of starting processes manually, the operator stops them: connected machines organize and execute the production chain themselves — defining every job-change step, sequencing work, and only asking a human when intervention is required. Productivity gains of up to 50% and a possible doubling of OEE were reported, and more than 400 Push to Stop-capable presses sold within two years.
At an open house in Japan a Speedmaster XL 106-8-P ran 12 different jobs of 150 sheets each in 30 minutes with just 20–25 waste sheets per job; a Thai label printer cut make-ready time 80%, to 10–15 minutes per change, with waste down to 100–300 sheets.

What can be applied
When skilled labor caps throughput, invert the interface: make the machine the default doer and the human the exception-handler, so the same crew runs far more jobs.
Aftermath
Push to Stop spread from sheetfed presses to folding and finishing, and by 2026 Heidelberg pushed AI-assisted autonomous printing (Prinect Touch Free) as the next step; more than 400 autonomous-capable machines had been installed since drupa 2016.
