Harting's Han rectangular connector became the industrial plug standard after 1956

Wilhelm Harting's robust, touch-safe Han connector defined the industrial rectangular plug; the Mittelstand firm became a global technology group.

The solution

Wilhelm Harting founded his Mechanische Werkstätten in Minden in 1945 with his wife Marie, making cookers and irons in postwar scarcity. He saw Germany's rebuilding industry needed better electrical connectors, not just more of the old ones.

Moving to Espelkamp in 1950, he consulted engineers from machine-tool and automotive firms, then built a connector with higher contact density, enclosing pin-and-socket contacts, and new screw and crimp techniques. The Harting Norm (Han), patented in 1956 and trademarked in 1957, became the symbol of the industrial rectangular connector.

The Han proved itself in machine building and energy; in the 1990s the modular Han-Modular series bundled power, signals, light and data in configurable housings, keeping the standard relevant as industrial Ethernet arrived. The company grew into a global technology group and the Han remains the industry benchmark.

What can be applied

Harting grew from the two-person workshop into a family-owned technology group with production across Germany, Europe, Asia and the US; Han remains the generic name for industrial rectangular connectors, and hybrid Han-Modular designs with integrated data are marketed as the future of machine connectivity.
