Godrej turned Naga sadhus into living eye charts at the Kumbh Mela

Eye charts painted on ascetics' backs make pilgrims test their own sight; 400,000 people received eye care at Maha Kumbh 2025.

the move

India carries one of the world's largest diabetes burdens, and diabetic retinopathy is a leading cause of preventable blindness. Because the disease shows no early pain, most people never screen until sight is already lost.

At the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 in Prayagraj, Godrej Creative Lab and the Eyebetes Foundation turned the most revered figures at the gathering into living eye charts. Bold Hindi letters in Devanagari were painted on the bare backs of Naga sadhus, so any pilgrim who looked at them was effectively taking a vision test.

If a pilgrim struggled to read the letters, volunteers guided them to a nearby free eye camp for formal screening and treatment. The initiative reframed screening as responsible self-care aligned with spiritual duty rather than a clinical chore.

Because the Naga saints are treated as divine, their visible endorsement carried a weight no doctor's poster could match, and the act of looking became the first step of a medical intervention.

why it works

  • The cultural authority of the sadhus made a health behavior feel sacred rather than medical.
  • The test happens passively — every glance at the saints is a screening moment.
  • The venue's scale (tens of millions of pilgrims) gave one idea enormous organic reach.
  • Free camps converted awareness into immediate care, so the campaign measured action, not just impressions.
the payoffLet faith itself perform the vision testinspired

what transfers

Attach the health behavior to an existing cultural ritual and its most trusted figures; people who ignore clinics will read a saint.

what came after

The initiative reached 600 million people and delivered eye care to 400,000; it won a Silver Lion in Health & Wellness at Cannes 2025 and was shortlisted at One Show.
