The 1886 Glückauf made the ship itself the oil container
Wilhelm Riedemann's Glückauf carried petroleum in tanks built into the hull instead of barrels, and bulk shipping replaced the barrel trade within years.

Until the late 19th century, petroleum crossed oceans in barrels and cans packed into ordinary ships — containers that weighed a lot, leaked, and had to be filled, handled and returned one by one. Losses of up to 30 percent of cargo on a crossing were accepted as normal.
Hamburg shipowner Wilhelm Riedemann first converted the sailing ship Andromeda with tanks, then commissioned a purpose-built tank steamer. German yards refused the order, so Armstrong, Mitchell & Co. on the Tyne built the Glückauf, completed in 1886, with her machinery aft of nine cargo tanks; she left Hamburg for the United States on 13 July 1886.
The design proved itself instantly. By 1887, 17 tank steamers were working the US–Europe oil route; within three years the barrel trade had collapsed and American barrel factories closed. The Glückauf ran until she grounded in fog off Fire Island, New York, in March 1893.

what came after
The Glückauf grounded off Fire Island in 1893, but not the idea: tanker fleets grew quickly and her hull-tank design became the template for every tanker that followed. Riedemann co-founded the Deutsch-Amerikanische Petroleum-Gesellschaft in 1890, renamed Esso AG in 1950.
