Settlers moving onto the treeless Great Plains in the mid-19th century needed to fence cropland against roaming cattle, but the standard fencing material of the era — wooden rails — didn't exist locally on the prairie and had to be shipped in by rail and wagon from distant forests at a cost that put fencing out of reach for many homesteaders. Without an affordable way to enclose land, farming and free-ranging cattle grazing were structurally incompatible over huge stretches of the plains.
The obvious paths forward were either finding a cheaper way to transport wood or engineering a lighter physical barrier still strong enough to stop a full-grown steer by sheer structural resistance — both of which kept the underlying assumption that a fence had to physically block an animal's body weight to work.

Glidden saw that a fence didn't need to physically stop a thousand-pound animal — it only needed to make the animal choose not to press against it. A thin, cheap wire fitted with sharp barbs could achieve total containment through the animal's own learned avoidance rather than through structural strength, since a cow that could easily push through a flimsy wire would nonetheless learn not to once contact meant pain.

Joseph Glidden, a DeKalb, Illinois farmer, patented a design on 24 November 1874 (application filed 27 October 1873) using two wires twisted together to hold sharp barbed spurs firmly in place — a thin, light, cheaply shippable strand that didn't need to physically stop a thousand-pound animal at all. Cattle avoided pressing against the barbs because of the pain, making the fence enforce itself through deterrence rather than structural mass.
why it works
Twisting two wires together to hold sharp barbs firmly in place produced a strand light and cheap enough to ship by rail even to a treeless prairie, with essentially no structural strength to physically block a large animal's weight on its own. But cattle reliably avoid a source of repeated pain once they've learned it's there, so the animal's own avoidance behavior does the actual work of containment rather than the wire's mass — meaning an extremely light, cheap material achieved what a far heavier and more expensive barrier would otherwise have needed brute structural strength to accomplish. Because the material cost collapsed relative to wood rail, farmers who previously couldn't afford any fencing at all could enclose land, which is what ended open-range grazing across the plains within a matter of years rather than decades.
the payoff
By 1880, over 80 million pounds of Glidden-style barbed wire were selling annually across the United States, making it the cheapest, strongest and most durable fencing option available, and small homesteaders used it to fence vast tracts of previously open grazing land — ending the era of long-distance open-range cattle drives to railheads like Dodge City and Abilene within a matter of years.
where it breaks
The mechanism only works on animals capable of learning and remembering a painful stimulus and adjusting behavior accordingly — it offers little protection against wildlife that won't form the same association, or against animals moving with enough force and momentum, such as a stampeding or panicked herd, to simply push through a thin barrier before the deterrent has any chance to register. It also depends on the barbs actually staying sharp and functional; a degraded, rusted or damaged wire loses its deterrent bite, and since it was never a structural barrier to begin with, offers essentially no backup containment once the pain mechanism fails to deter. And it requires the animal to encounter the fence under conditions where ordinary caution still applies — a herd driven by an external threat behaves differently from one calmly grazing near a boundary it has already learned to respect.
what came after
Barbed wire is credited by historians as one of the handful of inventions, alongside the rifle, telegraph and locomotive, that reshaped the American West's political, social and economic development, and Glidden's fortune from it helped found what became Northern Illinois University; the deterrence-not-blockage design principle it embodies remains the basis of security and agricultural fencing worldwide.
