Europcar's Opticar forecast, simulated and priced its fleet as one system

A decision system linking demand forecasts, fleet simulation and price optimization — used daily by managers in nine countries, and a 2018 Edelman finalist.

the move

Europcar, Europe's leading car-rental company serving more than five million drivers a year, faced decisions that pulled against each other: how many vehicles to buy, where to move them, and what to charge. Fleet, revenue and pricing were managed separately, so a price move could ignore an upcoming fleet glut.

With ACT Operations Research it built Opticar, which couples demand forecasting with discrete-event simulation and optimization solved by metaheuristics. The system anticipates demand up to six months ahead, improving capacity decisions — acquisitions, decommissions, transfers — and sets rental prices from the current fleet, competitor information and expected demand.

The result is a stable pricing system and one mathematical view of the business: managers in nine countries share it and use it as the starting point for all daily operations.

INFORMS named Europcar a finalist for the 2018 Franz Edelman Award, its prize for implemented operations-research work with verified impact.
