Envirotainer put an active fridge in air cargo containers for pharma
Envirotainer built the first actively temperature-controlled air cargo container in 1995, so biopharma flies at stable temperatures instead of on dry ice.

The solution
Biopharmaceuticals are temperature-critical: too hot or too cold ruins them, and vaccines and biologics increasingly had to fly across continents. Passive insulation and dry ice could not reliably hold a stable temperature across a multi-leg flight.
Envirotainer, founded in Stockholm in 1985, developed and marketed the first container with an active temperature-control system in 1995 — the container itself heats or cools to keep cargo at a set temperature for the whole journey.
The model was containers as a service: Envirotainer leases its fleet, runs more than 60 service stations worldwide and monitors shipments, so pharma customers get reliability without owning equipment. Today the fleet supports about 2 million doses of medicine a day.

What can be applied
When the environment can't be trusted, don't just insulate against it — carry the environment with the product; a controlled microclimate turns an unreliable network into a dependable one.
Aftermath
Envirotainer became the pharma air-freight standard for active containers; EQT and Mubadala bought it in 2022 at a €2.8 billion enterprise value, and the fleet has grown beyond 6,000 containers.
