Blackfrog's Emvólio put a solid-state fridge in a bag to keep the cold chain alive

India loses an estimated quarter of its vaccines each year because the last mile cannot hold the needed 2–8°C; during the COVID-19 drive some states reported wastage rates as high as 37%. The usual tool, the icebox, freezes or warms doses and fails in power-poor rural areas.

Blackfrog Technologies, founded by Mayur Shetty in Manipal, built Emvólio as a portable, battery-powered refrigeration unit. A patented rapid-cooling and solid-state mechanism with a PID controller holds vaccines at 2–8°C for up to 20 hours, without ice, and adds IoT monitoring for traceability.

The effect is that the cold chain travels: a health worker carries a powered fridge to a hamlet, rather than the hamlet having to reach a clinic. It suits solar power and low maintenance, and aligns with national vaccine and digital-health programs while being certified by Indian authorities and WHO prequalification.

Emvólio has delivered over 200,000 vaccines across 16 Indian states and into Africa, with up to a 99% reduction in wastage. The transferable logic is to relocate the most failure-prone part of a supply chain to a device that moves with the human who needs it.
