eBird, launched by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology in 2002, lets birders record sightings as structured checklists: when, where and how they went birding, and every species seen or heard. The 2009 Biological Conservation paper described the network's design.
Quality comes from a simple framework: regional experts build filters of likely birds for each date and place, unusual records are flagged, and reviewers check them. The result is data good enough for science, collected by hobbyists.
eBird grew into one of the world's largest biodiversity science projects, with more than 100 million sightings contributed each year and roughly 20% annual growth; its data have informed hundreds of conservation decisions and peer-reviewed studies.
