The solution
Deutsche Bahn had a perception problem: 72% of Germans flew abroad for holidays because they found their own country boring. The obvious fix was a patriotic domestic-tourism campaign or fare discounting. Instead, Ogilvy Germany attacked the belief itself: you don't need to fly anywhere to see the world, because the world's views exist inside Germany.
Working with Getty Images, the team used a lookalike algorithm to find German locations that visually mirror famous foreign landmarks. It then geo-targeted travel enthusiasts on Facebook and Instagram based on the specific destinations they were interested in, auto-generating personalized video ads: one side showed the foreign dream spot with the real-time flight price from the viewer's nearest airport; the other showed its German twin, reachable by train for €19. In the first 13 days, 750 unique ads were created automatically.
The campaign converted at 6.61% and drove a 24% revenue increase for Deutsche Bahn. It was shortlisted at D&AD 2019 in Digital Marketing, and Deutsche Bahn later returned to the idea with a 'No Need to Fly 2.0' iteration.
What it achieved
Show the same view at home, then compare live prices
Why it worked
The insight reframed a weakness (Germany is boring) into proof (the same views exist here), using images instead of arguments.
Personalization did real work: each ad compared the viewer's actual desired destination and live flight price against the €19 fare.
Automation made it scale — 750 unique ads in 13 days, impossible to produce by hand.
Price relativity turned a cheap fare into an exciting deal by anchoring it against thousand-euro flights.
Results were concrete: 6.61% conversion and 24% revenue growth.
What can be applied
Don't argue your product is as good as the aspirational alternative — show identical proof side by side, and let a live price gap close the sale.
Aftermath
The idea became a repeatable platform for Deutsche Bahn: Ogilvy Germany followed it with 'No Need to Fly 2.0', which extended the lookalike comparison mechanic. The original campaign was shortlisted at D&AD 2019 in Digital Marketing and became a reference case for personalized, data-driven dynamic creative at scale.
