Anti-addiction campaigns usually shout at people from billboards and hope the message survives until the moment it matters. The 855-HOW-TO-QUIT-(OPIOIDS) coalition — healthcare consultancy Anzen Health, Serviceplan and NGO partners — aimed at a far narrower, more decisive instant: when someone is holding a pill.

The insight was that US law forces every pill to carry a unique imprint code, and those codes double as street names. The team made the codes work as phone extensions on one national helpline: dial 855-HOW-TO-QUIT, punch in the code on your pill, and you hear from a person who quit that very pill — live when survivors are available, pre-recorded around the clock — then get routed to real treatment options near you.

Local prescription data shaped each area's ads so they featured the pill most used there; OOH ran near pharmacies and known meeting spots, and influencers who had quit promoted the line. The campaign reached 182 million people, drew over 42,000 calls averaging 4:07 minutes, and placed more than 8,600 treatment referrals. It was shortlisted for the Dan Wieden Titanium Lion at Cannes Lions 2024.

The pill's imprint code is the helpline's extension

It intercepts the exact moment of decision — pill in hand — instead of hoping a generic message is remembered later.

The imprint code is a pre-existing, legally mandated, user-known identifier: zero new behaviour is required of the caller.

Matching caller to a survivor of the same pill makes the first voice credible in a way a generic hotline cannot.

It built a coalition (NGOs, clinics, healthcare companies) around the number, so the asset outlived the ad buy.

Reach people at the moment of maximum intent with the object already in their hand; the best media placement is the product itself.

The initiative attracted $2.3M in public funding, 237 recovered users volunteered to share their own stories on the line, and more healthcare companies, NGOs and institutions joined the coalition after launch. The campaign was shortlisted in Titanium at Cannes 2024 and honoured at the ADC Awards, and it also directed attention toward the rehabilitation facilities in Anzen Health's client network.
