The Densmore tank car turned oil shipping from barrels into bulk tanks on rails in 1865

In 1865 Amos Densmore mounted two 40-barrel wooden tanks on a flatcar, letting oil move in bulk instead of in barrels; the design was built by the thousands.

The solution

In 1865 the oil fields of northwestern Pennsylvania moved crude in barrels, loaded one by one onto wagons and railcars — slow, heavy and prone to leaking. Shippers and railwaymen called the first tank cars 'tubs' and belittled them, but they were sturdy wooden tanks of 40 barrels each, mounted two to a flatcar over the trucks.

Amos Densmore, an oil buyer and shipper at Miller Farm on Oil Creek, is credited as the inventor. His prototype made a cloak-and-dagger test run from Titusville to New York, with telegrams from each station reporting whether the tanks leaked; they held, and the Densmore tank car was built by the thousands, becoming a common sight on freight trains.

The tank car arrived just months before the first successful oil pipeline and completed the shift to bulk transport: oil flowed by pipeline to the rail terminal, then by tank car to refineries and seaboard markets. By 1866, tank cars carrying Titusville oil could be seen in Jersey City and all along the Erie Railway.

What can be applied

Change the unit of transport, not just the route: when packaging dominates cost, making the vehicle itself the container — bulk tank instead of barrels — unlocks an order-of-magnitude gain.

Aftermath

Wooden tank cars were soon superseded by metal as oil volumes grew; by the early 1900s tank cars numbered in the thousands and became a standard rail category moving liquids and gases, and the Densmore car is remembered as the origin of rail bulk-liquid transport.
