Dell modeled supplier-hub inventory, cut it 40%, and found $43M in savings
A 14-week Dell/University of Michigan team modeled supplier-hub inventory: a 40% cut in revolver stock, 67% more turns, $43M NPV from one component alone.

the move
Dell's build-to-order model pushed inventory out of its own plants into supplier logistics centers, or revolvers, that feed final assembly. Nobody had a rigorous answer to how much stock those hubs should carry or what drove the amount.
In summer 1999 a Tauber Manufacturing Institute team — a University of Michigan engineering-business partnership — spent 14 weeks at Dell building an inventory model for the revolvers. It identified the drivers of revolver inventory and quantified target levels for the final stage of Dell's supply chain.
The model let Dell's regional materials organizations manage revolver stock tactically and let worldwide commodity management run supplier improvement projects. Predicted results: a 40% reduction in revolver inventory, a 67% rise in inventory turns, and $43 million in net-present-value savings for one component alone. Dell institutionalized the work by creating a supply-chain-optimization team.
why it works
- The model replaced guesswork about how much hub stock was right.
- Targets came from drivers, so managers could act on causes.
- Suppliers were recruited into improvement projects, not blamed.
- $43M NPV on one component justified a permanent optimization team.
what transfers
Don't order a cut — model what drives inventory, set targets from the model, and align suppliers on the drivers; the 40% reduction and $43M single-component NPV came from understanding, not pressure.
what came after
Dell formed a supply-chain-optimization team charged with incorporating the model into a strategic redesign of business practices and supervising the improvement projects it identified — turning a 14-week student project into a permanent capability. Dell also launched e-commerce and manufacturing initiatives with suppliers to realize the predicted reductions.
