the move

Rail is cheap for long hauls but poor at door delivery, and trucks are the opposite, so the two modes normally meet only where a crane can lift a container between them.

In the late 1960s Dachser's Thomas Simon was inspired by the maritime container and proposed a swap body: a freight body with fixed dimensions and fold-out legs that can stand on its own, so a truck can drop it and a rail wagon can pick it up. The first was made in 1971.

The swap body let a trucking company reach rail without building a crane, and once the system was standardised in 1980 any hauler could use any box, so intermodal service moved beyond the big seaports into everyday road journeys.
