Speeding is the leading cause of fatal road accidents in the Czech Republic, linked to 40% of traffic deaths, yet nine in ten drivers admit to exceeding limits and 43% blame time pressure. Decades of shock advertising had failed, because drivers dismissed fear-based messages as irrelevant to them.

The Czech Insurance Association reframed the problem from risk to time: exceeding the limit by 20 km/h on the country's longest highway saves only about 13 minutes on a two-hour journey. To make that abstract number tangible, it created National Delay Day — a day when the country deliberately ran late.

The Prague Astronomical Clock was stopped for the first time in 600 years, the national football cup semi-final, theatre productions, university classes and television programmes were postponed by 13 minutes, and more than 30 companies joined in. The message: if even the most time-sensitive events can wait, so can drivers.

The event reached about 75% of the Czech population and generated roughly €10 million in earned media across 178 placements. In the week after National Delay Day, speeding-related accidents fell 10%; the annual number of speeding victims dropped from 180 in 2022 to 138 in 2023.

Fight speeding as a time problem, not a risk

It attacked the driver's justification, time, not just the behavior.

Delaying beloved events made the 13-minute point experiential.

Earned media did the distribution, so reach came without media spend.

Behavioral data proved the reframe worked.

When fear warnings fail, reframe the behavior around what people value — time. Make the benefit of the bad habit tangible and absurdly small, and the audience redraws the trade-off itself.

National Delay Day became an annual event: after the 2023 pilot, the 2024 edition involved the Czech Football Association and Czech Television, and in 2025 the astronomical clock was stopped again with 148 chimes for the people killed in speeding incidents that year. The One Show recognized the campaign with a Merit in 2025.
