The solution
CRED bought IPL 2021 airtime like every other startup with venture cash, but instead of explaining its credit-card bill payment product it ran a concept ad: Rahul Dravid, 'The Wall' of Indian cricket and a byword for composure, stuck in traffic and erupting into road rage, shouting 'I am Indiranagar ka gunda'. The script came from comedian Tanmay Bhat (AIB) and Devaiah Bopanna, directed by Ayappa KM — a comedy team, not a traditional ad agency.
The shock value was engineered, not incidental. Dravid had never been seen angry in decades of public life, so the spot became instant meme material within hours of the IPL opener. Celebrities including Deepika Padukone riffed on it, police departments adapted it for advisories, and brands like Zomato, Dunzo, Ather Energy, Spotify India and CARS24 brand-jacked the trend, each tweet pushing CRED's name further at zero cost.
The ad drew criticism from parts of the marketing fraternity for never stating what CRED sells, and rival Magicpin spoofed it to mock CRED's opaque rewards. But as a top-of-funnel play for an invite-only, 750+ credit-score app, being the most talked-about brand of the IPL was exactly the brief — and CRED repeated the formula in later IPL seasons.
What it achieved
Flip a celebrity's signature trait; the shock is the media plan
Why it worked
Dravid's lifelong calm made the rage unexpected, and surprise is what makes people retell an ad voluntarily
Comedy writers, not an agency, wrote it — so it was built as a shareable joke first and a brand message second
The IPL opening-day slot concentrated a national audience on one screen at one moment, maximising the meme's ignition
The phrase 'Indiranagar ka gunda' was specific, local and quotable — easy meme grammar that others could adapt
CRED's invite-only exclusivity meant mystery about the product was a feature, not a flaw
What can be applied
A personality flip turns one celebrity fee into endless earned media: the audience retells the surprise, and other brands amplify it to borrow the attention.
Aftermath
The ad dominated Indian social media through IPL 2021 and entered the language as shorthand for hidden rage. CRED doubled down on absurdist celebrity casting in later IPL seasons (Jim Sarbh, Neeraj Chopra skits), cementing in-house concept advertising as its signature, while the marketing industry debated — loudly, in public — whether an ad that never explains the product is genius or waste.
