The solution
Every Halloween, brands flood Spain with horror-themed ads, and Burger King had already mined the territory with earlier stunts like 3AM Apparitions and Scary Clown Night. DAVID Madrid's creative director Fred Bosch admitted that with so many brands joining the date, it was increasingly hard to surprise anyone with a conventional campaign.
The obvious approach would have been another bigger, louder horror stunt. Instead, the team inverted the brief: since ghosts are invisible, they launched an invisible campaign. There were no ads to find — fans were challenged to photograph empty places as if Burger King ads were present and share them on X or Instagram with the hashtag #SometimesISeeBurger (#EnOcasionesVeoBurger).
A 'psychic' took over Burger King's community management, claiming to see the invisible ads in people's photos and revealing which free product each one contained, from Whoppers to Long Chickens to nuggets. The mechanic cost almost nothing in media, relied entirely on user participation, and turned the brand's community channels into the campaign itself.
People embraced the challenge, 'seeing' Burger King ads in buildings, TVs, football stadiums, churches, boats and videogames. The work was shortlisted at the D&AD Awards 2024 in Direct / Social, recognition for an idea that won attention precisely by having nothing to show.
What it achieved
Make the campaign invisible, like a ghost, and gamify seeing it
Why it worked
It solved a real problem — seasonal ad clutter — by refusing to compete on visibility at all.
The mechanic made absence participatory: the audience produced the campaign's content for free.
A psychic community manager gave the joke a repeatable reward loop tied to product giveaways.
It was shortlisted at D&AD 2024 (Direct / Social) despite zero conventional media spend on visible ads.
What can be applied
When everyone buys the same seasonal media moment, the winning move can be to spend nothing on visibility and make absence itself the joke and the game.
Aftermath
The Ghost Campaign ran through Halloween week 2023 in Spain, with fans submitting photos of 'invisible' ads across the country in exchange for free products. It was shortlisted at the D&AD Awards 2024 in the Direct / Social category, adding to DAVID Madrid and Burger King's long run of award-recognized Halloween stunts, and was covered by trade press as a standout example of low-budget social creativity.
