Chile built a cherry cold chain timed to Chinese New Year and owns the market

The solution
Chile grows cherries that ripen in December and January, the exact weeks Chinese households buy luxury fruit for Lunar New Year gifts. The opportunity was enormous, but the distance was brutal: the fruit is delicate, and a miss by days ruins a season's economics.
The industry responded by engineering the entire corridor around the holiday. Growers pre-cool fruit at origin, pack it into controlled-temperature containers, and send it on sea routes and air freight timed to arrive in the weeks before the festival. COSCO's 'Cherry Express' from San Antonio to Shanghai cut the sea voyage to 23 days and roughly doubled the supply that could travel by ship.
The result has been a compounding export machine. In the 2023–24 season Chile shipped 413,979 tonnes of cherries, over 90 percent of them to China, with January alone worth USD 1.4 billion. Over the previous seven years, cherry exports to China had grown at an average annual rate of 29 percent.
Why it worked
- New Year demand paid a premium that justified expensive air and fast-sea logistics
- Pre-cooling at origin extended shelf life enough to survive a 23-day voyage
- Refrigerated containers let sea freight do most of the volume at lower cost
- The industry coordinated across growers, ports and carriers around one calendar date
- Repeated success drew more acreage and carriers, reinforcing the corridor
What can be applied
For a perishable export, the product is only as good as the synchronized chain that lands it on the peak demand date. Build the corridor, not just the orchard.
Aftermath
Cherries have become Chile's flagship agricultural export to China, and the season is now choreographed around the festival, with China Eastern alone planning to import 12,000 tonnes in the 2024–25 season. The model has spread to other Chilean fruits targeting the same window.
