Sony and Philips merged two disc designs into one Red Book standard that won music

In the late 1970s Philips and Sony were independently developing digital audio discs: Philips had a working prototype player, Sony had advanced digital encoding and error-correction techniques. In 1979, after Philips demonstrated its prototype in Japan, the two rivals agreed to collaborate and formed a joint task force.

The collaboration settled the critical dimensions: a 120mm disc holding just over 74 minutes — sized, participants said, to fit Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. Philips contributed the manufacturing process and eight-to-fourteen modulation (EFM); Sony contributed CIRC error correction. The Red Book standard was finalized in June 1980, and the first CD player and album shipped in Japan in October 1982.

One standard meant one disc worked on every player, and the format's error correction made it a leap in durability over vinyl. CD sales rose quickly — by 1988 they overtook LP sales — and the same physical standard later grew into CD-ROM, CD-R and CD-RW.
