BIC Cristal's endurance claim was simple but easy to ignore: the pen could write about 3 km. For its 75th anniversary, BIC Brasil and VML Sao Paulo looked for a proof that would feel larger than a lab test.

They rebuilt Shakespeare's handwriting from rare samples, mapping letterforms, joins, slant, spacing and baseline drift. A robot then wrote and illustrated a 226-page Romeo and Juliet using a single BIC pen.

D&AD lists the work in its 2026 archive for Book Design and Graphic Design. Creative Salon reported that VML Sao Paulo won a Silver Lion for Shakespeare Bic at Cannes Lions 2025 Design Lions, noting the manuscript was recreated in 20 days.

Turn a claim into a relic

The endurance claim was demonstrated by an artifact, not asserted in copy.

Shakespeare gave a cheap pen cultural scale without changing the product.

AI and robotics were used as craft tools, not as the headline.

Donation to the Royal Shakespeare Company made the stunt's output live beyond media.

A functional proof becomes memorable when it creates an object people would value even without the ad.

The project was made for Brazil and donated to the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon. It also received Cannes Design recognition, extending a stationery product proof into award and culture coverage.
