BFM hid breast self-exam lessons inside business news and won the Golden Kancil
A business radio station interrupted its own news with self-check instructions, reaching listeners who skip health ads.
BFM 89.9
The solution
BFM, Malaysia's business radio station, wanted to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but its listeners were exactly the people who skip or ignore conventional health-awareness advertising. A standard PSA would be tuned out along with every other interruption to the business day.
McCann Erickson Malaysia's 'Anytime' campaign reversed the format. Instead of an ad break around the news, the self-examination instructions became part of the programming: listeners following business news were suddenly walked through how to check for breast cancer. The surprise was the mechanism — an awareness message that arrived when least expected, mirroring the campaign's core point that breast cancer can strike anytime.
The work targeted women primarily, with selected spots addressing male breast cancer too, and used BFM's serious, credible editorial tone so the instructions landed as information rather than charity. The stations' listeners could not skip it without skipping the news they had tuned in for.
At the 2011 Kancil Awards, the campaign won the Golden Kancil (Malaysia's top creative honor), plus Gold in Media and in the Rebel Kancil category. The following year it added awards at Cannes and Spikes Asia, making a radio-station CSR initiative one of the most decorated Malaysian campaigns of its era.
Why it worked
- Inserting the message into news made it unskippable for the target audience
- The surprise itself reinforced the 'anytime' message
- The station's own credibility made a health instruction feel like information, not advertising
- Creative and media were one decision, so execution and placement strengthened each other
What can be applied
When the target audience systematically ignores awareness messages, borrow the context they can't switch off — a message inside the content they came for beats a message around it.
Aftermath
The campaign won the Golden Kancil, Gold in Media and a Rebel Kancil at the 2011 Kancil Awards, and went on to win at Cannes and Spikes Asia in 2012, according to industry coverage of the radio medium at the time. It became a reference case for using editorial context, not just media placement, to reach audiences that systematically avoid public-service messages.
