The solution
Messaging is the one app category where interoperability barely exists: the big networks expose no public APIs, so no independent client, bot or device can join unless the network itself builds it. Beeper's answer was to bridge 15+ networks on top of the open Matrix protocol, making its service fully hackable and leaving it with an invite waitlist commenters put at around 177,000 people.
Eric Migicovsky, Beeper's CEO and the founder of Pebble, wanted a weekend device: a tiny, hackable screen with a physical keyboard for chatting with friends and family, and little else. Before Beeper, he said, the idea would have gone nowhere, because the chat apps had no APIs to plug into.
With SQFMI, the open-hardware maker behind Watchy, he built Beepberry: a Raspberry Pi Zero, a Sharp Memory LCD, a BlackBerry-style keyboard and a 2000 mAh battery, priced at $79 or $99 with the Pi. SQFMI opened pre-orders on 17 May 2023 with 50 early-access units and two larger batches planned for August and September, and the launch post was explicit: this is not a real finished product, it is basically a devkit.
The Hacker News launch drew 731 points and 227 comments, with people ordering on the spot, debating the power architecture, and recognizing the lineage, such as a PocketCHIP built by the same person behind the Pebble Time Steel. Design files were shared the same day. Beepberry worked as both product and proof: a physical answer to the closed-API problem, showing that Beeper's openness was real enough to build hardware on.
What it achieved
Use the one network you control as the open API, and let a cheap gadget be the proof and the marketing
Why it worked
The gadget sidesteps the closed-API wall entirely: Beeper's Matrix bridges already connect 15+ networks, so a small Linux device needs just one open client.
Honest devkit framing set expectations low enough that a small team could pre-sell before building a support organization, app-store approvals or a marketing machine.
Founder credibility did the distribution: the Pebble creator plus SQFMI's Watchy open-hardware record made Hacker News trust the pitch, earning 731 points and same-day orders.
Sharing design files and specs turned buyers into contributors and turned critique threads into a hardware community.
The gadget doubles as evidence: hardware that depends on Beeper demonstrates its openness more convincingly than any API document.
What can be applied
When the platforms you need are closed, do not wait for permission: build the open layer under them, then make your own openness the selling point.
Aftermath
The launch-day plan was deliberately small: 50 early-access units shipping immediately and two larger pre-order batches promised for August and September 2023, with commenters reporting orders within hours. The hardware repository opened in the launch thread, github.com/sqfmi/beepberry-hardware, now redirects to sqfmi/beepy-hardware, where SQFMI continues the project under the Beepy name.
