License Global reported on 6 October 2026, from Brand Licensing Europe's opening keynote, how a conversation at France Licensing Day in summer 2025 between Carrefour, Sun City and Jazwares became one of Europe's largest retail licensing activations in fifteen months: new Pokémon products in more than 1,500 Carrefour stores across France, Spain and Belgium for the franchise's 30th anniversary. Carrefour's toys and leisure director Marianne Lesimple, Sun City COO Emmanuel Assouline and Jazwares' Vincent Vandamme shared the playbook on stage.

The system behind it: Carrefour screens each pitch against six criteria — calendar alignment, product differentiation, brand awareness, multi-format capability, family appeal and licensor support ('time and money', says Lesimple) — and runs the portfolio in three tiers: two cross-country 'Highlights' a year with significant co-investment, country-level 'Capsules' with premium placement, and single-category 'New Launches'. The calendar works 18–24 months out: in June 2026 Carrefour began collecting information for 2028, and by December it decides and presents to leadership.

The demand data drives the design: Sun City's 2025 research on the French market found 91% of licensed product purchases happen in physical stores, 77% are impulse buys and 50% are gifts — 'consumers don't enter the store intending to buy a licensed product'. So the September launch put Pokémon everywhere a shopper could stumble on it: print catalogs, digital banners, influencer giveaways, mascot events in shopping centers, CRM, Pokémon gift cards, connected TV, even drive-through pickup branding.

The activation reached 1,300+ stores in France, 200 in Spain and 40 in Belgium through fourteen suppliers with 280+ SKUs, with pallet mixes localized per market but one visual identity recut in Carrefour's own blue and red. Jazwares redesigned its Snorlax plush packaging for Carrefour's store formats and reopened a Jigglypuff production line so apparel, bags and plushes told one story.

The clock is the moat: collecting 2028 information in June 2026 means competitors hear about a property after the shelf space is committed.

Tiering concentrates co-investment: two cross-country Highlights a year get the money where multi-category presence can actually change a store.

The impulse data redirects spend from demand generation to in-store discovery, which is where 91% of licensed purchases actually happen.

Retailer-initiated licensee coordination — reopening a Jigglypuff line because apparel carries the character — turns separate licenses into one story.

'Licensor support means time and money' filters half-hearted partners before the calendar is set.

When the data says most purchases are unplanned, the shelf itself is the media channel — and the retailer, not the licensor, is the only player who can orchestrate every brand into the same encounter.

The program launched in September 2026 across 1,300+ French, 200 Spanish and 40 Belgian stores with fourteen suppliers and 280+ SKUs; no sales results have been published. Carrefour is already planning 2028 activations, and License Global made the panel its keynote coverage on 6 October 2026.
