the move
BBOXX sells solar home systems in Rwanda and south-western Kenya to households far from the grid, using a pay-as-you-go model: customers pay in small mobile-money instalments rather than buying the kit outright.
The twist is IoT. Its SMART Solar platform connected nearly 20,000 active systems at the time of a 2017 Energy Policy case study, letting BBOXX monitor each system remotely, spot faults, and understand customer behaviour in ways that reduced defaults and made the business scalable.
By August 2019 the company had installed 200,000 solar home systems and said its pay-as-you-go model had positively impacted nearly one million people, operating in 12 African countries plus Asia, and it closed a $50 million Series D led by Mitsubishi Corporation.
