AIZOME bottles its dye waste as a certified skincare serum
Instead of claiming its dyeing was safe, AIZOME sold the wastewater as dermatologist-certified skincare, proving the claim with the product itself.

the move
AIZOME developed a dyeing method that uses only water, plants and ultrasound to make textiles that are not just harmless but carry health benefits. Yet in a market awash with green claims, the startup's message was lost, and consumers had little reason to trust a company that said its dyeing was safe.
Instead of publishing another proof point, AIZOME packaged the industrial wastewater from its dyeing process - the literal by-product people would assume was toxic - and sold it as WASTECARE. The product was tested and certified to dermatological standards and presented in premium skincare packaging, with a few drops of organically grown stabiliser added to keep it usable after shipping.
The move reframed the whole debate. If the wastewater, normally the most suspect part of textile manufacturing, passes dermatological certification and is safe enough for skin, then the process that produced it must be clean. The by-product became the campaign's strongest evidence, and the brand stood out precisely by not making a claim it could not show.
why it works
- A claim about wastewater is abstract; a certified skincare product makes it tangible.
- Dermatological certification and premium packaging gave the waste third-party legitimacy.
- Selling the by-product created a new revenue line instead of a disposal cost.
- It was impossible to dismiss as marketing because the product was demonstrably used.
what transfers
When a sustainability claim is hard to believe, don't argue it - turn the thing being questioned into a product, so the claim is proven by its own commercial viability.
what came after
WASTECARE drew attention precisely because it was hard to ignore, earning a Gold Lion and a Bronze Lion at the Cannes Lions as well as multiple D&AD Pencils including a White Pencil for positive impact. It also won the Platinum in the Body, Health & Beauty category at the Pentawards. The project became AIZOME's most-recognised proof that its plant-and-ultrasound dyeing is genuinely non-toxic, and set the startup apart from competitors who could only assert the same thing.
