UnionPay got shoppers to switch payment apps by turning the receipt into a stranger's poem
the problem
Getting someone to switch which payment app they habitually use requires overcoming pure inertia — the incumbent app already works, already has their cards saved, and no rational feature comparison or discount promotion is emotionally compelling enough to make people go through the friction of switching a daily habit
background
By 2019, Alipay and WeChat Pay had such deep behavioral lock-in among Chinese mobile shoppers that China UnionPay's competing QuickPass (云闪付) app faced a pure habit problem, not a feature or trust problem — switching payment apps required active effort for a transaction that, once completed, produces nothing but a forgettable receipt showing an amount already paid. No functional improvement to a payment app changes how emotionally uninteresting the moment of paying itself is.
UnionPay collected 805 poems written by 'left-behind children' — rural Chinese children whose parents work in distant cities, a large and often invisible population — and loaded them into physical POS terminals and the QuickPass app. Paying as little as ¥1 via UnionPay's mobile tap-to-pay triggered the machine to print, instead of an ordinary transaction total, one child's poem as the receipt.
the move
The campaign made the specific act of choosing UnionPay's payment method, rather than an incumbent app, the trigger for encountering something genuinely worth reading — converting the single most emotionally empty moment in a retail transaction (the receipt) into the actual content people wanted, so switching payment methods carried an immediate, tangible personal reward that had nothing to do with cashback or fees.
the payoff
The campaign hashtags generated a combined transmission volume exceeding 5.3 billion mentions/views, and proceeds funded more than 300 arts and literacy courses along with public libraries reaching over 3,000 children across Henan, Sichuan, Xinjiang, Anhui and Yunnan provinces, with a 2020 follow-up season expanding the program through a dedicated QuickPass mini-program.
what came after
The 'Poetry POS Machine' campaign is widely cited in Chinese marketing and brand-strategy literature as a model for embedding social-good storytelling directly into a product's core functional moment (payment, in this case) rather than running it as separate advertising alongside the product, and continued into multiple annual seasons specifically because the mechanism kept generating organic engagement beyond its initial launch.
