Tokyo's Dawn café hired people who couldn't leave home — as the robots serving the tables

Service work needs people — but the people who most wanted the work were the ones who could never reach a workplace.

Japan's service industry is chronically short of staff, while people with severe disabilities — ALS, spinal cord injuries, spinal muscular atrophy — are almost entirely locked out of employment, and the most severely affected cannot leave their homes or hospital beds at all. Kentaro Yoshifuji, who spent parts of his childhood hospitalised and knew that isolation first-hand, founded Ory Laboratory in 2012 to build telepresence robots for exactly those people: machines with a camera, microphone and speaker that a user can operate with nothing but eye movement.

The robotics industry's obvious play for cafés was autonomy — machines that replace the waiter. OryLab's robots were the opposite by design: deliberately not autonomous, 'not AI', vessels that need a human every second they are on. The open question was whether a paying café could run entirely on staff who would never physically walk through its door, and in late 2018 the team opened a two-week test in Tokyo.

For the café, the standard move is automation — self-order kiosks and autonomous servers that remove the waiter entirely, which is where the industry's money goes. For the pilots' side, the standard answers are benefits payments or sheltered workshops. Both accept the same premise: a person who cannot reach a workplace cannot do service work. Both also throw away the thing customers actually pay for — the feeling of being served by a person.

The industry read service robots as a way to remove people; OryLab read them as a way to bring people in. A body that cannot commute can still host a conversation, take an order, pour a coffee — if the body is the robot.

the move

The Dawn Ver.β café ran for two weeks with ten pilots — people with ALS, spinal cord injuries and other conditions — operating 120-centimetre OriHime-D robots from their beds, some with eye movement alone. The robots carried drinks, cleared tables and talked with guests, and the pilots were paid 1,000 yen an hour: the standard rate for Japanese waiting staff, not a disability stipend. The experiment went permanent in 2021 as the BUNSHIN Robot Café DAWN in Nihonbashi, where over 80 pilots now work — including a tele-barista rig in which a pilot with ALS, a former career barista, brews coffee through a Kawada robot arm.

why it works

OriHime-D carries the parts of the job that need a body — reach, carriage, presence — while the pilot supplies everything that cannot be automated: attention, humour, a story. Because the robot needs its human every second, the pilot is not supervised by the machine but IS the machine, which is why the café can honestly say its robots are not AI. Paying the standard wage rather than a token completes the circuit: the pilots are staff, not a charity exhibit, and customers return for the encounter, which funds the next shift. The technology only removes one barrier — presence — and presence turns out to be the load-bearing one.

Ten pilots in the 2018 pilot, paid the standard 1,000 yen an hour; by 2021 the café went permanent, and 80+ pilots serve from their beds.

where it breaks

It fails wherever the job is pace rather than presence: a lunch rush cannot run through a 120-centimetre avatar, and anything needing speed, strength or sterility stays with on-site staff or machines. It depends on connectivity, and on pilots well enough to work a shift from a hospital bed — a good day is not guaranteed. And the honesty is load-bearing: the moment customers suspect the 'person' is a script or an AI, the value collapses, because the product is precisely that somebody real chose to be there.

what came after

The pilot's ambition — a permanent café, crowdfunded — opened in Nihonbashi in 2021 and is still running: over 80 pilots, a tele-barista built with Kawada Robotics, even neighbourhood tours guided by a shoulder-mounted OriHime. The pilots put the result plainly — 'I didn't think I could ever work,' said a teenager with spinal muscular atrophy operating from Okayama. Whether the model outlives its novelty is the open question; what it settled is that the missing ingredient in service robots was never autonomy — it was somebody.
