Early flush toilets solved the immediate problem of removing waste from a room, but doing so meant connecting a pipe directly from the house down into the sewer system below — and that same open pipe let foul, and later understood to be genuinely dangerous, sewer gas flow freely back up into living spaces any time the connection sat idle between uses. The fix couldn't simply remove the direct pipe connection, since that connection was exactly what let the toilet flush waste away in the first place.
An active solution — a valve or door that closed off the pipe between uses — would have worked in principle, but only as long as someone remembered to operate it correctly every single time, and any mechanism with moving parts eventually wears out, jams or gets left open. What was needed was a seal that stayed closed automatically, by the ordinary physics of the system, without requiring anyone to do anything extra.

In 1775, Alexander Cumming patented a flush toilet design that bent the outlet pipe into an S-shape immediately below the bowl. Gravity alone kept a small plug of water permanently trapped in the curve of the S after every flush, sealing the pipe airtight against gas from below with no valve, door, or moving part of any kind — the seal simply existed as a byproduct of the pipe's shape and ordinary water flow.
the payoff
The S-trap reliably blocked sewer gas from entering buildings without requiring any maintenance or user action to keep working, and the same passive water-seal principle, refined into the U-shaped trap by Thomas Crapper in 1880 to prevent the S-trap's tendency to occasionally siphon itself dry, remains the standard mechanism in nearly every drain and toilet installed today.

Cumming's trap is recognized in the history of sanitary engineering as a foundational invention behind modern indoor plumbing and public health, and it remains a frequently cited example of solving a problem with a passive, self-maintaining physical mechanism rather than a system that depends on consistent human vigilance to keep functioning — a principle that has held for roughly 250 years without needing to change.
