When the 1956 Suez Crisis cut off Middle Eastern oil and Britain imposed petrol rationing, buyers of large British family cars switched in a panic to cramped, ultra-light German 'bubble cars' like the Isetta and BMW 600 — small three-wheeled or narrow machines built around motorcycle engines. BMC chairman Leonard Lord saw the shift as an existential threat to a business built on bigger cars, and gave chief engineer Alec Issigonis, who had already designed the successful Morris Minor, an almost impossible brief: a real four-seat car no more than ten feet long.

The industry's small cars up to that point had been small mainly by being cramped — shrinking the cabin to shrink the car. Issigonis instead attacked the mechanical layout: he mounted the engine sideways (transverse) with the transmission built into the engine's own oil sump, cutting the powertrain's length to about eighteen inches, then pushed ten-inch wheels — smaller than any tire then in production — out to the absolute corners of the body to maximize the cabin space inside that footprint.
