Issigonis turned the engine sideways and shrank the car around it to fit four in ten feet

The 1956 Suez oil crisis sent British buyers fleeing to tiny German 'bubble cars' that BMC had nothing to compete with

背景

When the 1956 Suez Crisis cut off Middle Eastern oil and Britain imposed petrol rationing, buyers of large British family cars switched in a panic to cramped, ultra-light German 'bubble cars' like the Isetta and BMW 600 — small three-wheeled or narrow machines built around motorcycle engines. BMC chairman Leonard Lord saw the shift as an existential threat to a business built on bigger cars, and gave chief engineer Alec Issigonis, who had already designed the successful Morris Minor, an almost impossible brief: a real four-seat car no more than ten feet long.

The industry's small cars up to that point had been small mainly by being cramped — shrinking the cabin to shrink the car. Issigonis instead attacked the mechanical layout: he mounted the engine sideways (transverse) with the transmission built into the engine's own oil sump, cutting the powertrain's length to about eighteen inches, then pushed ten-inch wheels — smaller than any tire then in production — out to the absolute corners of the body to maximize the cabin space inside that footprint.

换别人会怎么做

The available responses to the bubble-car threat were to shrink an existing BMC model's cabin to cut its overall length, or to rush out a minimal three-wheeler like the German competitors', trading usability for size.

他们看到了什么

Issigonis saw a car's size came from how its engine and drivetrain sat, not passenger space sacrificed. Turn the engine sideways, put the gearbox in its oil pan, and the car shrinks around the mechanicals.

那一手

The Mini, launched in 1959, packed a transverse engine and gearbox, front-wheel drive, rubber cone suspension instead of heavier springs, and sliding rather than wind-down windows into a car under ten feet long and four feet wide, dedicating roughly 80 percent of that tiny footprint to passengers and luggage rather than mechanicals.

为什么管用

Compressing the powertrain into eighteen inches and pushing the wheels to the corners didn't just save space, it decoupled the car's external footprint from its interior usability for the first time — competitors' small cars had always traded one for the other. That let the Mini be genuinely tiny outside while still seating four adults, which no bubble car could match.

值了多少

The Mini sold roughly 5.3 million units over four decades, though BMC reportedly lost money on every early unit sold.

什么时候会失灵

It requires solving a genuine architectural constraint, not just re-styling — a transverse engine and sump-mounted gearbox took real engineering risk that BMC's finance department resisted, reportedly losing money per unit for years. It also assumes buyers value usable space over other features that a conventional layout might make easier to add.

后来呢

The transverse engine and front-wheel-drive layout Issigonis compressed into the Mini became the standard architecture for small cars worldwide, copied by nearly every manufacturer's compact model that followed.
