United Fruit refrigerated the whole banana chain from tree to city store.

A banana starts ripening the moment it is cut, and before refrigeration it could not survive the long voyage from a Caribbean plantation to a North American city. Sailing to market on general freight vessels meant much of the cargo was lost at sea.
United Fruit controlled the problem by owning the chain. Its Great White Fleet used refrigerated steamships, and its Fruit Dispatch subsidiary ran fifty-two branch houses that forecast demand and handled distribution. Bananas went by hand into pre-cooled holds, then into refrigerated railcars with ice bunkers and ventilators.
The company also built ice plants and re-icing stations at key rail junctions, so a banana could stay cool for most of its journey. By 1930 roughly three-quarters of its steamships had refrigerating plants, and the fleet moved hundreds of thousands of bunches a year.
Controlling the temperature made the banana the perishable with the least average loss carried by the railroads, and turned a tropical crop into a cheap daily staple in cities far from the tropics.

By 1930 the Great White Fleet had about a hundred refrigerated steamers and carried hundreds of thousands of banana bunches a year to the US, the UK and Canada. The company-run cold chain became a model for modern refrigerated distribution, and its reefers and branch-house system shaped how perishable produce was moved for decades.
