A container is a big, heavy, uniform unit, so moving it should take one lift. But in the 1950s most ports had only mobile revolving cranes that were far too small and inefficient for the load.
In 1957 Matson commissioned a study and found no existing crane on the market could handle a loaded container. The next year PACECO was awarded the contract to design one; it replaced riveted trusses with all-welded box girders, producing a distinctive and clean A-frame gantry.
The first high-speed, dockside container-handling cranes entered service on January 7, 1959, at Alameda, California. They cut ship turnaround from three weeks to eighteen hours, and the A-frame design set the standard for ports everywhere.
A crane that could move a whole box in one swing turned the quay from a bottleneck into a fast handoff, so the container could finally deliver on its economies.

The A-frame ship-to-shore crane spread to ports worldwide and set the pattern for the giant gantry cranes that load and unload container ships today. PACECO's Portainer cranes became ubiquitous, and the machine finally matched the container's speed at sea, cementing containerisation as the dominant way to move goods.
