Osstem's one Busan plant makes 10M implants a year and rejects 2-micron errors
World's largest implant factory bets on precision: 2-micron tolerances, cleanrooms, automation — and eight years as volume leader.
Osstem Implant
那一手
Osstem Implant, a Korean challenger to Swiss dental-implant incumbents, bet everything on one idea: the world's largest single implant factory. Its Busan K1 plant — 19,108 square meters with capacity for 18 million sets a year — became the base for eight consecutive years as the global leader in implants sold by volume.
Precision is the product: parts whose thickness or length differs by about 2 microns — one-fiftieth of a hair's width — are rejected, even though patients only feel differences from about 50 microns; machines double-check what workers might miss. Cleanrooms are kept nearly 10 times cleaner than an operating room, and employees with colds are barred from entry.
Process discipline is systematized: six key process controls and a five-stage precision-inspection system push defect rates toward a 100 PPM target, while surface treatment — masking, blasting, etching and coating — is being automated. Products from the plant are exported to 32 countries, and K2, K3, A1 and C1 plants extend the system globally.
为什么管用
- Strict tolerances give dentists a defensible reason to switch.
- One giant plant beats many small ones on unit economics.
- Certifications (KGMP, FDA, MDR) convert process into trust.
- Automation raises speed without raising defect rates.
可以搬走什么
When the product goes inside a human body, precision at industrial scale is the trust story: publish tolerances, certify the process, let volume prove quality and cost can coexist.
后来呢
By 2024 the plant produced about 10 million implants in a year (18 million including drills and equipment) and held the global sales-volume lead for eight straight years; Osstem continued automating and expanding production capacity while pushing toward a world's No.1 dental company goal.
